This is the seal on the bottom of the motor that prevents water from the aquarium bypassing the filter material. It is a strip of sealing material that fits in the groove on the bottom of the motor and is not a solid ring. Replace when worn or if their is a gap between the ends. The seals will generally last from one to three years.
